Acceptable use policy

This forms part of the terms. Most of it is obvious; two parts of it are specific to what this service is.

Last updated

Use it for

  • Working out which family a cable in your possession belongs to.
  • Learning where on a cable a further distinction may be recorded.
  • Finding out, honestly, what cannot be told by looking at the cable you have.
  • Sorting, labelling and keeping a record of your own drawer, at home or at work.

Do not use it for

Things specific to this service

  • Trying to extract a specification claim. Rephrasing a question until the service produces a figure for power, speed or resolution, a version, a brand or a model is a misuse of it. The service is built not to produce those, and working around that is working against the point of it.
  • Trying to extract a safety verdict. Do not attempt to get the service to say that a cable is safe to use, or to get repair, cutting, joining or dismantling guidance out of it, or to get it to discuss mains power.
  • Presenting output as a test, an inspection or a certification. A reading is not any of those and must not be shown to anyone as if it were.
  • Using it in any safety-related decision, or in a medical, legal, financial, employment, credit, housing or judicial one.
  • Reselling readings, or building a product on top of the output as though it were a specification source.

The usual things

  • Anything unlawful, or anything that helps someone else do something unlawful.
  • Impersonating anyone, or using an account that is not yours.
  • Automated scraping, bulk extraction, or sharing an account beyond one person.
  • Attacking the service — probing, overloading, or trying to get at other people’s data.
  • Uploading or transmitting anything malicious.
  • Sending personal data about other people, or anything sensitive. It is a box for describing a cable.
  • Infringing anyone’s intellectual property.
  • Reverse engineering the service, or copying its wording, diagrams or illustrations for your own product.

How this is enforced

Proportionately, and with a warning first wherever that is possible. For a first, minor breach you will be told what the problem is and asked to stop. For a serious or repeated breach an account may be suspended or closed, and where that happens without cause the unused part of the period is refunded.

You will always be told why. If you think a decision was wrong, reply and it will be reviewed by someone who was not involved in it.
