These terms are between you and CHARLY COMTEX LTD, trading as Whichcable. Company details are on the legal information page. By creating an account or using the service you agree to them.
Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights. If any term here is inconsistent with a right you have under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, or any other consumer protection law that applies to you, that law wins and this term does not apply.
1. What the service is
Whichcable takes a written description of the two ends of a cable and does three things with it. It narrows the cable to a family by the shape of its ends. It sets out, in order, the places on the cable where a further distinction may be recorded, and what the absence of each would rule out. And it states which things cannot be established by looking at the cable at all.
It is a reference and an aid to your own observation. It is not an inspection, a test, a certification or professional advice, and it is not a substitute for any of those.
2. What the service is not, and will not do
These limits are the substance of the product and not fine print:
- No specification or compatibility claim of any kind. No figure is given for power, current, voltage, speed, resolution or refresh. No brand, model, series or retailer is named. There is no cable model data behind the service. It does not say whether any cable will drive any particular piece of equipment.
- No judgement about safety. The service never says whether a cable is safe to use or unsafe to use. If a cable looks damaged, if the outer covering is split or deformed, if a connector is loose, or if it gets warm in use, do not use it — that is the only sensible default and it is not a judgement about your particular cable.
- No guidance on cutting, opening, joining or repairing anything, and nothing at all about mains power. Where a description mentions any of these, the service stops and tells you so instead of producing a reading.
- No disposal rules. How cables should be disposed of differs from place to place, and whatever applies where you are is what to follow. This service does not cover it and recommends no recycling scheme, service or organisation.
- No image upload. There is no way to send a photograph, on any plan. The reasons are set out in the AI notice.
- Not for high-risk purposes. The service must not be used for or in connection with medical, legal, financial, safety-related, employment, credit, housing or judicial decisions.
3. Automated output
Part of the service is produced by an automated system. Narrowing to a family is done in your browser from a fixed table of shapes. Where a model is used, its only job is to sort a description of two ends into one of those shape groups; it is never asked to make a claim about a cable.
Automated output can be wrong. Treat every reading as a starting point for your own observation of the cable in your hand, and never as a verdict. The AI notice sets this out in full.
4. Your account
- You must be at least 18 to hold an account or to subscribe.
- One person, one account. Keep your password to yourself and tell us if you think someone else has it.
- You are responsible for what is done through your account.
- You may close your account at any time from your billing page. Closing it ends the subscription at the end of the period you have already paid for.
5. Plans, prices and what is included
All prices are in US dollars (USD) and include VAT at 20%. The price you see is the price you pay; there is no separate charge added at checkout.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Allowance / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | USD $0 | — | 50 |
| Marking | USD $5 | USD $48 | 400 |
| Tangle | USD $15 | USD $144 | 1500 |
Allowance — what it is, exactly
Allowance is a measure of use of this service within the period it was issued for. To be completely unambiguous about it:
- Allowance is not money.
- Allowance is not stored value and is not a payment instrument of any kind.
- Allowance cannot be redeemed for cash and has no cash value.
- Allowance is non-transferable and cannot be sold, given or moved between accounts.
- Allowance does not roll over. It belongs to the period it was issued for and expires with it.
- There are no top-up packs and no wallet. If you run out, wait for the next period or move up a plan.
6. Subscription, renewal and cancellation
Paid plans renew automatically at the end of each period at the price then shown for that plan, until you cancel. You are told the price, the period and the renewal date before you pay, and again in the confirmation email.
Cancelling takes one step, from your billing page, and no more clicks than subscribing did. There is no retention offer, no survey and no telephone call. Cancelling stops the next renewal; the plan continues to the end of the period you have already paid for.
Your statutory right to cancel within 14 days, how it can end early, and how refunds are handled are all set out on the cancellation and refunds page, which forms part of these terms.
Subscription rules adopted early
The subscription contract regime in Part 4, Chapter 2 of the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 is expected to come into force in spring 2027. This service applies five of its requirements now, voluntarily, ahead of that date, and undertakes to keep applying them:
- Key pre-contract information is shown immediately next to the button that takes the payment — price including tax, billing period, renewal date, and how to end the contract — and not on a separate page you have to go and find.
- Full pre-contract information is sent in the confirmation email, in a form you can keep and re-read, along with both cancellation acknowledgements you gave at checkout.
- Reminder notices are sent before each renewal — at least seven days before a monthly renewal and at least twenty-eight days before a yearly one — saying what will be taken, when, and how to stop it.
- A cooling-off period on renewal. Beyond the initial statutory 14 days, a further 14-day period to cancel without penalty applies after any renewal of a contract of twelve months or longer, and after any discounted or free introductory period ends and full price begins.
- An exit that is as easy as the entrance. Cancelling is a single action inside your account, available at any time, with no requirement to write, telephone or explain.
7. Price changes
If the price of your plan changes, you are told at least 30 days before it takes effect, in an email that states the old price, the new price and the date. You may cancel before then and the change will not apply to you. Silence is never treated as agreement to a higher price.
8. Acceptable use
The acceptable use policy forms part of these terms. In short: do not use the service to break the law, to scrape or resell it, to attack it, or to try to make it produce specification, compatibility, safety, repair or disposal claims that it is built not to produce.
9. Your content and ours
What you type stays yours. You give us only the permission needed to run the service for you — to process your description, produce your reading, and store it against your account if you are on a plan that saves readings. What you type is not used to train any model.
The site, its wording, its diagrams and its illustrations are ours. You may print and keep your own readings and cards, including for use at work. You may not republish the site’s own material as your own or resell it.
10. Availability
We aim to keep the service available and to give notice of planned maintenance, but this is a small service and we do not offer a guaranteed uptime figure. If the service is unavailable for an extended period during a paid month, contact us and we will put it right, by refund or by extension, as you prefer.
11. Our responsibility to you
If we fail to comply with these terms, we are responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our breaking this contract or of our failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss or damage that is not foreseeable.
We do not exclude or limit our liability in any way where it would be unlawful to do so. That includes liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, and for any breach of the terms implied by sections 9 to 11 and 49 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 — the rights that the service be supplied with reasonable care and skill, as described, and fit for a purpose made known to us.
Where our liability can lawfully be limited, and you are a consumer, it is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the event. Where you use the service for business purposes, we are not liable for loss of profit, loss of business or loss of anticipated savings.
Because it matters here and is easy to lose in a list: the service tells you where to look on a cable and what cannot be told by looking. Deciding whether to plug a cable into your equipment is your decision, and this service does not make it for you or claim to.
12. Ending the agreement
You may stop using the service at any time. We may suspend or end your account if you break the acceptable use policy, if payment fails and is not put right, or if we are required to by law. We will tell you why, and, unless the law prevents it, give you the chance to put it right first. If we end your account without cause, we refund the unused part of your period.
13. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. If a change is to your disadvantage, you are told at least 30 days before it takes effect and may cancel without penalty before then. Changes never apply retrospectively.
14. Law and jurisdiction
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and disputes may be brought in the courts of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere in the United Kingdom you may also bring proceedings in your own country’s courts. If you are a consumer resident outside the United Kingdom, this choice of law does not deprive you of the protection of any mandatory rule of the law of the country in which you are resident.
