The standard aimed at
WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Conformance is checked as part of building the site rather than audited afterwards, and the measured contrast figures are written into the stylesheet where anyone editing it will see them.
What has been done
- Contrast measured, not estimated. Body text runs at 13.96:1 against the page. Three colours in this palette fall below the 4.5:1 needed for normal-size text, and they are therefore never used for body copy — only at large sizes and as stroke colour on diagrams, where 3:1 applies and is met.
- Colour is never the only signal. Every layer carries its name in words and its own stroke style — solid, ribbed, dashed, broken — as well as a colour. Turn the colour off entirely and nothing is lost.
- Motion can be switched off. The magnification on the home page and the drawing animation on loading states are disabled entirely when your system is set to reduce motion. Nothing depends on movement to be understood.
- Nothing depends on hover. Every hover state has a keyboard focus equivalent, and every resting state already carries its information.
- Large type by default. Body text is fluid from 17px to 20px and scales with your browser setting up to 200% without anything being cut off.
- Every reading has a plain-text equivalent — family, what each observation ruled out, and, in full and separately, what cannot be told by looking. It can be copied into any reader you like.
- The where-to-look cards print. There is a print stylesheet, and the cards print black on white with the diagram intact, so you can take them to the drawer without a screen.
- Skip link, landmarks, one h1 per page, and a heading order that does not skip levels.
- Every illustration has alt text, and no information is carried only by a picture.
- Forms have real labels, and errors are announced, not just coloured.
- Focus is always visible, as a square outline offset from the element.
Known limits
- The magnifier on the home page is a pointer and touch interaction. The information it demonstrates — that the mark is very small, and that this is why photographs are not accepted — is stated in text beside it, so nothing is lost if you cannot use it.
- Some diagrams are wide and scroll sideways inside their own frame on a narrow screen. The page itself never scrolls sideways.
- The service has not been audited by an external body. If you find something wrong, the report below is the fastest route to it being fixed.
